New Zealander Marten Rabarts moved to Mumbai in 2012, having been appointedHead of Development & Training of the NFDC – National Film DevelopmentCorporation of India, ending his 12 years as Artistic Director for BingerFilmlab, Amsterdam. Rabarts promptly set up NFDC LABS, as an evolution of theNFDC Film Bazaar labs he’d headed since 2008.
He started his working life as an actor and contemporary dancer, studyingin London and at Australia’s Centre Forthe Performing Arts then moved into film beginning work as an assistanteditor in New York on Oscar winning short MollysPilgrim and continued with Propaganda films in Los Angeles in the 1980s.Several years working freelance in production brought him to the PolyGramFilmed Entertainment group, relocating to London in 1990 working in thePolyGram World Sales company Manifesto as TV sales manager and in 1992 asAssociate Producer with Working Title Films. His tenure at Binger Filmlab from2000 included many award-winning feature films and theatrical docs. Recentsuccesses from Martens’ ventures in India include the much applauded The Lunchbox and 2014 Cannes– Un CertainRegard selection Titli. 2014 Toronto FilmFestival saw the Netpac – Best Asian Film Award go to Shonali Bose Margarita with a Straw on which Martenwas creative consultant.
