Liang Zhao was born in Liaoning Province, and graduated from Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. He is an independent documentary filmmaker and visual artist. His earlier works include Farewell to Yuanmingyuan (1995), Paper Air Plane (1997-2001, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam IDFA2001), City Scene (2004, Special Jury Award, Oberhausen International Short Film Festival Germany), Return to the Border (2004-2005, IDFA2005) etc. Crime and Punishment (2007) won the Montgolflère D’or at the Festival des 3 Continents 2007. Petition (1996-2009) was an official selection of the Cannes film festival in 2009. Together (2010) was selected for 61st Berlinale. Behemoth (2015) was selected for the international competition at Venice International Film Festival 2015, which was the first time ever for a Chinese/Asian documentary film. The film won the Green Drop Award and Prix SIGNIS Award. I’m So Sorry(2021) is Zhao’s first film on an international theme.
