Up to September 15th, The 5th Next Wave Awards International Student Documentary Competition had collected 785 films from 252 universities in 36 countries and regions.
After 3 rounds of selection, the final results were announced, and we held the Awards Ceremony in the Lecture Hall 1 of Guangzhou Library on December 13th.
In Awards Ceremony, Tan Fentao, the vice inspector, delivered the speech on the ceremony, which he affirmed the status and role of The 5th Next Wave Awards International Student Documentary Competition in the college student documentary field in China.

Tan also expected more and more excellent documentaries could take advantage of such national platform to show their understand of China.

Jin Xingzheng, a famous Chinese documentary director, sat with the tutor and creators of Train No.5639 for a great interview, in which they shared their creative experience with audience.
Also, Lynn Barlow, Chairlady of Wildscreen Festival, was invitied to the ceremony. She shared her 20-year filming experience in BBC, saying that the skill of story telling played the most important role in making documentary, that was why documentary directors should equip with talent and serious attitude.

The documentary depicts the stories of the family of Yu Zhuqing and herself, an 83-year-old female worker who retired from Pingyao No.2 Knitting Factory. By recording Yu Zhuqing's daily life of the year when she experienced the Chinese New Year, moving to a new house, returning to hometown and visiting relatives, this documentary tries to show the comedy and tragedy of a nobody in a revoluting era, as well as the changes of individual and younger generations' identity recognition, by ways of Video Ethnography, Participatory Observation and oral history interviews.

This film shows the profound friendship between farmers like Wu Wenzhen and people on train 5639, which reflects the humane care on train 5639.
The train communicates the Miao villagers to the outside world, carrying the villagers' wishes of a happy life. It is more than a slow speed train with a patience close to the pace of low-income people .

The traditional herdmen's life is changing gradually as time goes by. With the relationship between yak and people, whether or not the faith the Tibetan believe in for thousands of years will be shake? When the youngest daughter goes back home from the modern university, whether or not her emotion to yak will be different?

A Nowhere Man

Mr. Luan, born in 1930, is a retired construction worker. He often wheels his converted bike around the city, collecting used reinforcing bars. His family is facing conflicts due to the allocation of replaced apartments. He, however, chooses to live alone at the demolition site where his family has lived for generations. He spends his days hammering rebars. The sound of hammering echoes the noises from the construction site of river-view apartments on the other side of the river. He admires and appreciates the development of this small city. However, the prosperity of this city seems to have nothing to do with him. He is now a nowhere man in his land.
Things start to change when he falls ill. His children once again gather around him.
