The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society has cancelled this year’s festival in response to a recent upsurge of local COVID-19 infected cases.It is the first time that the HKIFF had been cancelled since its establishment.

 

The 14-day HKIFF44, which would have incorporated this year’s Cine Fan Summer International Film Festival, was originally scheduled in March and later rescheduled in August.

 

KEEP ROLLING, a novel documentary about the Hong Kong director Ann Hui - who is honored by the Venice Film Festival with Golden Lions for Life Achievement, planned to debut at the 44th HKIFF, but now its premier is also canceled.


 

News 2: The 10th BJIFF Postponed to the Late August

 

The 10th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) announced that it will be held in late August. Yet, the official date is not determined.

The 10th BJIFF was originally scheduled between April 19 and 26, and later confirmed to be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

 

News 3: Chinese Box Offices Generated Over 100 Million RMB on Re-opening

Week One

 

The total box offices between July 20 to July 26, the first week of Chinese cinema reopening, exceeded 100 million yuan. The newly released Chinese children film A First Farewell, which had been awarded at the Berlin, Tokyo and Hong Kong International Film Festivals, ranked as the top of the list on Day One with a total box office of 1.5 million yuan. Whereas, the Hollywood movie Dolittle took the crown for the whole week box offices.

Michael Jordan to the Max, Pandas, Like the Dyer’s Hand will be screened at The 23rd SIFF

 

MICHAEL JORDAN TO THE MAX will be part of IMAX screening plan at the 23rd Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF). The film follows Michael Jordan's basketball career and focuses on his last championship season with the Chicago Bulls in 1998.

 

The Chinese IMAX documentary PANDAS, narrated by the actress Li Bingbing, will also be screened during the SIFF. The 3D IMAX documentary tells about the living environments of pandas and other wild animals in China.

 

Also on the screening list is GZDOC2019’s Finalist LIKE THE DYER’S HAND. The film, directed by Chuanxing Chen, is about the Chinese legendary female poet Jiaying Ye’s bumpy life. In the film, the final episode of Chen’s literature documentary trilogy, is shortlisted for the Golden Goblet Award in the documentary section of the 23rd SIFF and it will be screened on July 26.
